Pranayama for Stress: A 10-Minute Daily Breathing Practice
Health information — general guidance, not medical advice. Read our editorial policy.
You breathe all day without thinking about it. Pranayama is simply breathing with attention — and a few minutes a day can make a busy, noisy day feel noticeably calmer.
Set up
Sit comfortably on the floor or a chair with your spine tall. Choose a quiet time — early morning or before bed works well. Practise on an empty stomach.
1. Deep belly breathing — 3 minutes
Place one hand on your belly. Breathe in slowly through the nose so the belly rises, then breathe out slowly. Try inhaling for 4 counts and exhaling for 6. A longer exhale is naturally calming.
2. Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril) — 4 minutes
Close the right nostril with your thumb and inhale through the left. Close the left with your ring finger, release the right and exhale. Inhale right, switch, exhale left. Keep it slow and smooth — never strain.
3. Bhramari (humming bee breath) — 3 minutes
Inhale deeply, then exhale while making a soft humming sound with your lips closed. Feel the gentle vibration. Many people find this the most relaxing of all.
Tips
- Consistency matters more than duration — ten minutes daily beats an hour once a week.
- If you feel light-headed, return to normal breathing.
- Avoid forceful techniques like Kapalbhati if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, unless a trainer guides you.
A trainer can teach you more techniques safely and pair breathing with meditation. Find pranayama and yoga for stress near you.
